Walton County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is named for George Walton, one of the three men from Georgia who signed the United States Declaration of Independence. The other two were Button Gwinnett and Lyman Hall. In July 1946, the county was the site of a lynching of two young black couples, including a veteran of World War II, four persons in total. The mob of 40 men tied them up and shot the two couples so many times that the bodies were difficult to identify. Nobody was ever prosecuted for the murders. In 2013 a new person talked to authorities, claiming his late uncle and at least 12 other members of the Ku Klux Klan had been among the killers, but it was not clear if the investigation could use his testimony.〔(Joeff Davis, "New information to be presented in unsolved Georgia lynching case" ), ''Creative Loafing'' (Atlanta), 1 March 2014〕 Walton County is located about 30 miles east of the city of Atlanta. Monroe is the county seat, with other major towns being Loganville and other communities.
